On the occasion of International day of Roma population -8 April, the Center for active communication and the Commissioner for Roma Issues of Palilula organized in the hall of Nis Cultural Center - NKC, ceremony where outstanding individuals, organizations and media representatives assigned Awards for improving the social status of Roma population in the Decade of Roma. After the welcoming words of Bojan Zenulović and Dragan Osmanovic, the guests were addressed by Dušica Davidovic, a member of the Council of the City of Nis and then by Ilija Jocović, assistant of the head of the Economy and sustainable development department. About the situation of Roma representatives spoke also the representatives and advisers of the National Council of Roma and the League for the Decade of Roma.

This cultural celebration in NKC was attended also by representatives of Roma associations from Prokuplje, Kragujevac, Pirot, Vranje, Sokobanja, Bujanovac, members of cultural and artistic societies, artists, vocal soloists, hip hop artists, theater amateurs. They all showed part of the creative sense on the scene in NKC.

In Palilula Municipality, according to the 2002 census, there are about 3435 members of the Roma population, although this number is much, much higher. "The municipality of Palilula, in very responsible way deals with the full integration of Roma population into our society-we do everything within our jurisdiction, says Prof. Dr. Igor Novakovic. There should disappear prejudices in hiring, training, implementation of health care and we should solve the housing problem. There should not be discrimination on any grounds.

However, it is necessary to solve certain problems of Roma population quality of life systematically, specially housing issues, way of individual work activities. Palilula Municipality tries over various projects in cooperation with the city and donors to provide additional funds for this purpose.
